Every ingredient. Every function. Explained.
A transparent breakdown of the seven ingredient groups behind every Lumi-noble formula — what each one does for your pet's skin and coat, how it works, and why we chose it.
GROUP 01
MICROBIOME SUPPORT
Prebiotics & Biotics
Nourish beneficial skin flora. Restore the microbial balance that cleansing can disrupt — supporting the skin's first line of defense.
HOW IT WORKS
Prebiotic nutrients feed the community of beneficial microorganisms living on your pet's skin. A healthy microbiome strengthens the barrier and reduces sensitivity. Unlike probiotics (live bacteria that are fragile in formulation), prebiotics remain active through the product's full shelf life.

GROUP 02
STRUCTURAL PROTEINS
Coat Repair & Shine
Bind to the hair shaft. Rebuild tensile strength. Reduce breakage and improve manageability — without heaviness or residue.
HOW IT WORKS
Hydrolyzed proteins are broken down into small peptide chains that can actually penetrate the hair cuticle during bathing. Lower-molecular-weight proteins work from the inside of the strand; larger ones coat the outside for smoothness and shine. Over time, repeated use visibly improves coat texture.

GROUP 03
BOTANICAL ACTIVES
Targeted Plant Extracts
Chosen for bioactivity, not scent. Anti-inflammatory, soothing, antioxidant — each botanical delivers a measurable skin benefit.
HOW IT WORKS
Functional botanicals contain polysaccharides, flavonoids and bioactive compounds that calm irritated skin, reduce oxidative stress and support post-bath comfort. Unlike fragrance-first brands, we select botanicals for skin function first — and screen every single one for feline safety.

GROUP 04
HUMECTANTS
Hydration Drivers
Pull water into the skin and hair shaft. Prevent the post-bath dryness that cheaper shampoos leave behind.
HOW IT WORKS
Humectants attract water molecules from the surrounding environment into the stratum corneum (the outermost skin layer). Different humectants work at different molecular weights: small molecules like glycerin penetrate deeply, while hyaluronic acid sits on the surface holding water where it matters most for coat hydration.

GROUP 05
MILD SURFACTANTS
The Cleansing System
Lift dirt, oil and debris — without stripping the skin's natural lipid barrier or disrupting its microbiome.
WHY SLS-FREE MATTERS
Conventional surfactants like SLS are aggressive because they're cheap and lather richly — but that lather comes at a cost. They indiscriminately strip lipids, disrupt the skin microbiome, and leave skin more alkaline than when they started. Our coco-derived surfactants clean gently and rinse completely — no residue, no barrier damage.

GROUP 06
BARRIER-SUPPORT ACTIVES
Lipid & Ceramide Replenishment
Replenish the skin's natural protective layer after cleansing. Reduce post-bath dryness and lock in hydration.
HOW IT WORKS
The skin's outer layer is held together by a matrix of ceramides and essential fatty acids — the 'mortar' that keeps cells bonded and water locked in. Bathing can temporarily deplete these lipids. Adding ceramides and squalane back during the wash restores the matrix, reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and supporting a healthy barrier.

GROUP 07
pH & FORMULATION BALANCERS
Stability & Species Safety
Hold the formula at a pH safe for both dogs and cats (6.5–7.0). Preserve active ingredients without parabens or harsh preservatives.
WHY pH MATTERS
Human shampoos run at pH 4.5–5.5 because human skin is more acidic. Dog skin sits around pH 7.0–7.5, cats slightly lower. Using human shampoo on a pet disrupts their acid mantle and invites irritation. We buffer our formulas to pH 6.5–7.0 — safely within the tolerance window for both species.

Ingredient Questions Answered
A prebiotic is a nutrient that feeds beneficial microorganisms already living on your pet's skin. Rather than adding foreign bacteria (as probiotic shampoos attempt), prebiotics support the existing microbiome — the community of microbes that forms the skin's first line of defense. The result: stronger skin barrier, reduced sensitivity, and better tolerance to frequent bathing.
The main ingredients to avoid: SLS and SLES (strip the skin's natural lipid barrier), parabens (potential endocrine concerns), synthetic dyes, phthalates, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives like DMDM Hydantoin, DEA/TEA compounds, and essential oils toxic to cats (tea tree, pennyroyal, pine, wintergreen, citrus).
Sulfate-free shampoos use milder surfactants — typically coco-derived — that clean effectively without disrupting the skin's lipid barrier or microbiome. Pets have thinner, more alkaline skin than humans, making them particularly sensitive to harsh sulfates. Look for decyl glucoside, coco-betaine, or sodium cocoyl isethionate on the label.
Dog skin sits around pH 7.0–7.5, slightly more alkaline than human skin. Cat skin is closer to pH 6.5. Safe pet shampoos are formulated in the pH 6.5–7.5 range. Human shampoos (pH 4.5–5.5) are too acidic for pets and disrupt the skin's natural defenses over time. Lumi-noble formulas are buffered at pH 6.5–7.0 — within the safe window for both species.
Ceramides are naturally occurring lipids that form the 'mortar' of your pet's skin barrier — binding skin cells together and locking water in. Bathing can temporarily deplete these lipids. Adding ceramides back during the wash helps restore the matrix, reducing transepidermal water loss and preventing post-bath dryness. Especially valuable for pets with sensitive or compromised skin.
Hydrolyzed collagen is collagen protein broken down into smaller peptide fragments. These peptides are small enough to bind to the hair shaft during bathing, improving softness, shine and manageability. Unlike unhydrolyzed proteins (which sit on the hair surface), hydrolyzed collagen can actually penetrate and strengthen damaged cuticles. Over consistent use, coats show reduced breakage and improved texture.
Functional botanicals — selected for bioactivity rather than fragrance — absolutely work. Colloidal oatmeal is FDA-recognized as a skin protectant with documented anti-itch properties. Aloe, calendula and chamomile contain polysaccharides and flavonoids with measurable anti-inflammatory effects. The key is selection: 'natural' isn't automatically safe. Lumi-noble screens every botanical for efficacy AND feline safety.
Only if the formula is specifically designed for both species. Most dog shampoos are unsafe for cats because: (1) cats have more sensitive skin, (2) they groom off any residue, ingesting trace chemicals, and (3) they can't metabolize certain compounds like essential oils. Lumi-noble formulas are pH-balanced at 6.5–7.0, use only gentle coco-derived surfactants, and exclude all cat-toxic essential oils. Always check species indication on individual product labels.
